Visit to Hamminkeln - 8th to 15th September 2006

The recent visit to our twin town Hamminkeln, Germmany was very successful. 25 people took part and included our Mayor Cllr. Dudley Water and his consort and the deputy mayor of Durham City, Cllr. Bob Wynn.

A very interesting programme had been provided for us by the Burgermeister of Hamminkeln, Herr Holger Schlierf, and included an exchange of ideas of common concern in the three communities regarding demographic trends. We were blessed with warm sunshine throughout the week which enhanced our experience of the beautiful scenery of the Lower Rhine region.

The picture shows most of the group on the steps of Holy Angels church in Wesel. The church, built originally on the foundations of an old fortification for the town was destroyed in the allies advance across the Rhine. It has been rebuilt with stunning modern interiors.

Other visits included a trip on the Rhine, a drive in horse drawn carriages around the nature park in Dingden, and a visit to a medieval market in Kamp-Limpfort. Presents were exchanged at a farewell dinner. Chairman Joyce Jordan and ex-chair Keith Wells presented a genuine miner's lamp to the town of Hamminkeln. This had been restored by Keith and was well received. Hamminkeln presented us with a framed photograph of the group which was taken on the steps of the town hall. This is currently on display in Ceddesfeld Hall in the Oldham Room.

Anyone interested in joining the association should contact Joyce Jordan on 620783 or Nancy Wells on 620467. We will welcome our German friends to Sedgefield next year, when we celebrate 25 years of this partnership.
