A WELCOME AND AN APPEAL FOR HELP
Open Church
St. Edmunds Church is open for several hours on most weekdays from Easter to Harvest time. About 400 visitors come in each year, some having seen the welcome board by the gate, others may have made a special journey hoping to find the church open.
Volunteers in attendance give a regular hour or so to offer a friendly service to all comers and especially the local community; so when the welcome board is by the gate please come in.
Offers of help are always welcome, this year it is especially needed for Monday mornings and Thursday and Friday afternoons. Anyone interested please call in and have a word with those in attendance.
Come to meet friends and have a cuppa. Continue to bring baby in after baptism, let toddlers enjoy the space and discover the toy box.
Come and find someone to talk to, or just to find a quiet place and enjoy a peaceful moment as many have done for centuries.

NEWS ABOUT THE HEATING SYSTEM
Around Christmas 2004, it became very obvious that the church heating system, which is more than 100 years old, had a major leak somewhere. Problem was, nobody could find it!
As the leak became worse, a large hole was located in a pipe beneath the floor forward of the north aisle, where the steel pipe work had been buried in damp soil and rubble for many years.
The heating to part of the church was isolated, so that the remainder of the heating system could be used. Thankfully, the cast pipe work elsewhere in the church appears to be in remarkably good condition, despite its old age, so it is hoped that the recent leak will prove to be an isolated problem.
In 2005, after many months of planning and applications for a 'faculty' (required for modifications to Church buildings), the heating system to the north aisle is being completely re-plumbed by TW Steam and Heat from Durham, who specialise in work to churches and other large installations.
As apart of this work, the pews to the north aisle have been completely removed to allow installation of the new pipe work, whilst four large cast iron radiators have been re-located to provide warmth where it is most needed.
Replacement seating will now be provided adjacent to the pews in the Nave (or central aisle), leaving plenty of space for disabled access to the Vestry and toilet facilities, which in turn are due to be updated in the new year.
The total cost of this work is around £5,000, half of which will be contributed by the Friends of St Edmund's.
