Water Birds at Hardwick Country Park

Courtesy of Tim Randall and Ian Hunter

Mallard are common but the males are beautiful.

Coot are easy to spot on their nests

Coot can be very aggressive when nesting.

A male mute swan.

The male mute swan is called a cob.

The differences between the cob and pen (female) are quite easy to spot.

Male and female tufted ducks are very different

The 'tuft', seen here, may not always be so obvious but the yellow eye and white side make this male duck easy to spot.

Adam brought Max along to feed bread to the ducks. Max was careful not to feed too much to each duck because it is not the best food for them.

The young ducks can easily eat too much and make themselves ill.

Grain is the best food for ducklings, cygnets and their parents.

Max knows that bread is good for him!
