Free Tuition
Dyslexia Action in Darlington has funds from the European Social Fund and Learning and Skills Council, Co. Durham, to provide free tuition for adults. Marilyn Butterworth, Principal of the Darlington Centre, said, "We have money to provide free specialist tuition to adults who:
- Do not have an NVQ Level 2 qualification, and
- Work 16 or fewer hours per week, and
- Live in County Durham."
"We have in the past been contacted by adults who need help with literacy, and who would really like to try to take a National Test. It has been disappointing and frustrating that we have not had funds available to do this - until now. We can now offer initial assessment and tuition by specialist tutors free of charge to adults who would like to improve their reading and writing skills."
A former student contacted Dyslexia Action to state the following:
"What you have done for me so overwhelms me that still, five years on, I need to phone you up and tell you. I was in a wilderness, lost at sea, until I met Jenny (Dyslexia Action National Adult Co-ordinator). From that time, my life was changed.
I felt like a prisoner. I've never been in prison, and I hope never to be, but through the tuition, my world just opened up. I had felt condemned and criticised, and I went through the anger phase, but everything was changed by the tuition, and I still get emotional every now and then when I think about it. I'm able to tell people now and ask them to be patient with me. People generally understand; some do still judge me, but I can take it now. What you're doing is great, every one of you is great, and the Dyslexia Institute (now Dyslexia Action) has changed my life."
